Bomb threat shuts down Nunavut schools temporarily; will reopen when safe

RCMP cruisers are seen parked outside of Nakasuk school in Iqaluit Sept. 22, after the territory’s schools were evacuated due to wide-spread bomb threats.

The threat also prompted the evacuation of the University of Prince Edward Island, forcing the school to close for the day.

The Nunavut RCMP received a threat at 9 a.m. Thursday, saying that bombs had been left in schools across the territory.

The RCMP said they don’t believe this threat is credible either, and schools will reopen once they are confirmed to be safe.

“If you are the parent or guardian of a child in a school or daycare in a school, please pick them up immediately”, the education department said in a public service announcement posted online.

“Staff are taking students to safe locations in the community and buses are meeting them there”.

The threats are similar to those received in other parts of Canada and the USA earlier this week, all of which proved to be hoaxes.

The division provided a letter to students about the threat.

Earlier in the day, police conducted searches of the schools, and teachers were asked to inform RCMP of anything suspicious or out of place.

The evacuation order came shortly after two Nova Scotia Community College campuses were evacuated after an undisclosed threat was made on the schools in Halifax and in Cape Breton.

“Although RCMP does not believe the threat to be credible, we are working with the department of Education to ensure the safety of Nunavutmiut”, the RCMP said September 22.
