A member of the Syrian opposition meeting in NY said there was “no indication that the Russians have any interest in a ceasefire”.

A meeting by members of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) in NY ended on Thursday night without an agreement on the ceasefire in Syria, following the Assad government’s announcement of a new offensive on Aleppo.

Kodmani added: “I think if we say it’s a moment of truth, it’s a moment of truth for the worldwide community, the United States, its allies, the U.N. And it’s a tragic moment for the population of Aleppo”.

“We’re evaluating some mutual ideas in a constructive way, period”, Kerry told reporters at the United Nations, one day after worldwide envoys failed to find a way to revive a U.S. and Russian-brokered truce.

“While the world is struggling in NY to achieve a truce, Assad is continuing to bomb Aleppo into ruins”, Steinmeier said, referring to several days of failed talks on restoring the ceasefire, attended by the top diplomats of the United States and Russian Federation. “We can hear the planes right now”, said Mohammad Abu Rajab, a radiologist in Aleppo.

Kerry said he would wait for Lavrov to tell him on Friday if Russian Federation would suspend airstrikes for a significant period of time.

The talks between Kerry and Lavrov in NY on Thursday broke up after Russian Federation refused USA demands that it promise to immediately ground the Syrian regime’s air force.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault added that Russian Federation had not been able to provide a satisfactory response to calls for Syria to ground its jets.

The U.S. -Russian agreement marked their second attempt this year to halt the war.

The bombing on Thursday night and Friday morning shook the ground and made streets impassible, according to anti-government activists in Aleppo.

Witness Mohammed Rasoul said the fleet was “erased from the face of the earth” when it was struck in Urm al Kubra. “Many of the wounded are children, and when you look in their eyes they weep and say we have nothing left”. In the Al-Kalasseh district, three buildings were levelled by a single strike, and rescue workers tried frantically to reach survivors using a single bulldozer and their bare hands. Three units owned by volunteer rescue group, White Helmets, were hit in the raids. It would also fuel Moscow’s longstanding complaint that Washington and its Sunni allies have failed to separate legitimate members of the Syrian opposition from radical Islamic groups.

In an official statement quoted by a state news agency on Thursday, the Syrian army announced fresh aerial campaigns in Aleppo and asked civilians to avoid “terrorist positions”.

An army source said on Friday that the offensive would be “comprehensive”, with a ground assault following air and artillery bombardment.

US Secretary of State John Kerry called on Syria and Russian Federation to end aerial bombardment of eastern Aleppo, stating that there was “no chance” of peace without an end to military operations and coordination between the parties.

“This could go on for hours or days before the ground operation starts”. The announcement and reports of clashes on several edges of the besieged city raised concerns of imminent ground operations.
