Bombs detonated in NY and New Jersey
“We conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle of interest in New York City but no arrests were made and no one has been charged with any crime”, Langmesser said.

Investigators said they found similarities between this device and the bomb that exploded in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood Saturday evening, but have not linked the two events at this time. Police are seeking Ahmad Khan Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized citizen from Afghanistan. Both New Jersey Transit and Amtrak warned of delays following the incident. A similar bomb went off in a garbage can in the Jersey shore town of Seaside Park Saturday morning.
The device was transported to the NYPD Bomb Squad facility at Rodman’s Neck Range in the Bronx.
According to NBC News’ Miguel Almaguer, Bollwage said Sunday’s device “could have hurt” a lot of people if it had gone off. Amtrak shut down service on its Northeast corridor between NY and Trenton, New Jersey, because of the police activity.
Police arrived at the scene Sunday night and found five bombs in the backpack.
Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said five devices were found in one bag in a trash can by two men at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday near the Elizabeth train station.
Rahami is believed to be the man seen in surveillance video at both the scene of the explosion on Manhattan’s West 23th Street and the scene on West 27th Street where the unexploded device was found, a police source said.
NEW YORK – Authorities have identified a suspect in the Manhattan explosion case as a 28-year-old New Jersey resident of Afghan descent who may be armed and unsafe, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday, Sept. 19. In the course of rendering one of the devices safe, it detonated. When pulling it apart, they found wires attached to the package.
NJ Transit, which runs about 450 daily trains to and from NY, struggled with delays past the noon hour. “The drone indicated it could be suspicious and it could be a live bomb”, Bollwage said. “I know there are other devices, but I don’t know what they are made up of but they are going to have to be removed and all the fragments from the other pieces will have to be picked up so the FBI can investigate this fully”.

Reports of an explosion near the Elizabeth train station near scene of investigation into suspicious package. A message left with the Federal Bureau of Investigation wasn’t immediately returned. At around 12:30 a.m., a loud explosion occurred in the area, according to local reporters who took to social media. New York’s emergency management department says that New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains are being held at New York Penn Station. The two men who found the backpack thought it might contain something valuable, but they alerted police when they saw wires and a pipe on the devices, the mayor said.
