Radcliffe, who made his name as Harry in the film adaptation of J K Rowling’s books, is expected to follow in the footsteps of his co-star Emma Watson by seeing the play at the Palace Theatre.

It feels as if time has stood still at Lello, a Gothic Revival style bookstore in the historic centre of Porto, whose heady “olde worlde” ambiance inspired some of the scenes for Harry Potter.

Public previews of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play have started and J.K. Rowling has a message for all the fans.

Author JK Rowling, director John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne were all smiles as they joined the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on stage at the play’s official West End opening.

Bookshops are hosting midnight book release parties, as they did for each new novel during the height of Pottermania. The book is the eighth in the “Harry Potter” series.

Despite the book’s departure from a narrative format, Harry Potter fans here can’t wait to get a copy, Osborne said.

Customers can pre-order the books, then stop at the store for a wristband starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Barnes & Noble says that the new text has been No. 1 on their bestseller’s list since February, when Rowling announced the publication.

A fancy dress competition which is being held between 11am and midday – where you can come dressed as your favourite Harry Potter character and all photo’s will be published in the Echo as part of a competition. “This is a little tentative, because none of us knows for sure what the play will be like, but this is our plan at this point”.

Joan Mackenzie, book manager for Whitcoulls, expects it to be “the biggest book of the year, by some considerable distance”, although she says that being a script it is unlikely to sell as well as previous Harry Potter books. “We’re seeing a lot of kids coming in and looking for the books and a lot of parents who were growing up with it bringing their kids in”.
