Booted: Browns trade punter Lee after he passed on tackle

Last season with Cleveland, Lee set Browns single-season records with a 46.7-yard gross average and a 40.1-yard net average.

The Carolina Panthers have acquired punter Andy Lee in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, the team announced on its official Twitter account.

The Panthers, clearly not at all happy about their punting situation, have made the move to acquire one of the game’s best punters from the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland will receive a 2018 fourth-round draft choice and punter Kasey Redfern.

The Panthers did not indicate what would happen to Scifres, who attended Monday’s practice but did not work out. Redfern has never punted in an National Football League game before, but his paycheck indicates that. Now that said, it’s likely that the Browns were in the position of more veteran cost cutting where they felt an expensive punter was a big luxury for a team that’s likely to not be excellent this season. They faced Cleveland on the road a year ago. This would mark the second straight season they have faced Lee since dealing him away. When he came to the sideline, Lee, a three-time Pro Bowler with San Francisco, was met by Browns coach Hue Jackson, who angrily voiced his displeasure.

Factoring in other trades, the Browns now hold picks from the Philadelphia Eagles (first round), Tennessee Titans (second round), New England Patriots (fifth round) and Indianapolis Colts (seventh round) for the 2017 NFL Draft. He ranks ninth with 325 punts inside the 20-yard line. In three games this preseason, he has 12 punts for 562 yards and a 46.8 gross average.
