Saturday’s home defeat to Bristol City came as a huge disappointment.

Boro dominated possession as they chased a leveller in the second half but couldn’t break down a stubborn Bristol City back line.

“We had very good players on the pitch and it’s hard to understand”.

Admittedly, it was more a case of a cool finish rather than costly errors on our part, but you couldn’t help feel that the mass changes administered to the team had contributed in no small way.

Karanka bemoaned the fact that his side were not able to make the most of their chances, but insisted that they did not perform as well as they should have done in the defeat.

“Then it was important to be as organised as we could be in training without taking too much out of their legs yesterday, but it’s worked out well for us”.

The visitors, newly-promoted after last year’s League One title success, led earlier and saw the job out well with BetVictor responding by easing Aitor Karanka’s side to 3/1 (from 5/2) to be crowned champions and 11/10 (from 10/11) to be playing top-flight football next term.

“So I am left wondering because I can’t understand what happened”.

“We went up and people weren’t expecting us to win but we were as that’s our mentality”, he said. “We have played really well and not got the wins”.

“I don’t know what happened”.
