Bosa sits out Chargers practice with leg injury

Chargers coach Mike McCoy said the injury is not a long-term concern, but it could jeopardize Bosa’s playing status for Sunday’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bosa, who missed more than a month of camp and the whole preseason while his reps and the Chargers battled over contract language, is dealing with a soft tissue injury. Bosa, the third overall selection, watched the session with his left leg wrapped and he walked with a slight limp.

Bosa remains on the National Football League exempt list and would have to be added to San Diego’s active roster by Saturday in order to play Sunday.

Losing Bosa for game action will be a significant blow, but the Chargers may be better equipped to handle it now than they have been in recent years due to the talent in their secondary.

“He was a little tight today, so we chose to hold him out”, coach Mike McCoy said.

When asked if Bosa was a candidate for injured reserve, McCoy said: “No, it’s not an IR deal”.

“He’ll catch up”, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane said. Sophomore Darius Philon will get the start in his place.

Bosa is a supreme talent who commands attention from the offensive line whenever he is on the field, and if San Diego is forced to be without that at some point, it will be a hard dynamic to replace.
