Boston 3B coach Butterfield ejected against Tigers
One interesting subplot rising out of the Cespedes-Porcello swap, is fast-rising Tigers star Michael Fulmer. He has faced Detroit once – previous year in Boston – and allowed a run on five hits with six strikeouts over seven innings without getting a decision.

“I think you just gotta tip your cap sometimes”, Fulmer said.
While Yoenis Cespedes wasn’t at Comerica Park on Friday night, he certainly had a major impact on the game. And two titles that still fit it afterward.
Boston played in its fourth city in five days.
Boston Red Sox third base coach Brian Butterfield was ejected in the second inning of Thursday’s game at Detroit.
7th-9th Innings: The offense continued to chug on for the Red Sox in the seventh inning, as they were able to add two more runs off of a Hanley Ramirez double.
Detroit Tigers’ J.D. Martinez celebrates his two-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the second inning of a baseball game Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, in Detroit.
With a man on first, Fulmer pitched Ortiz carefully until he challenged the 40-year-old with a 95-mph heater up and in.
And that’s what they witnessed in Friday’s 10-2 pummeling by the Boston Red Sox. “They’re a fastball-hitting team, they were ready for the fastball and I feel like every time I went inside they were ready for it”, Fulmer said. Fulmer also gave up two homers in his only previous outing against Boston, with Dustin Pedroia and Bogaerts blasting solo shots in Detroit’s 4-3 win on July 27th at Fenway Park. It wasn’t a product of diminished velocity, and both Fulmer and Ausmus rebuffed the idea that the rookie might have been suffering from fatigue.
“After one start? When he’s been phenomenal until this day?” “He’s been phenomenal until this day, and after one start?” I think he was still throwing 95 miles per hour.
“I think that’s one of the difficulties that comes sometimes when you sign a big contract like that”. The Sox won just four of those games.
“They weren’t chasing sliders”. “Give him credit – he threw well and he’s having a really good year, plus I’m sure he had a little extra incentive coming back here”.
Buchholz and Detroit’s Matt Boyd each allowed a run in six innings, leaving the game in the hands of the relievers. In six starts since joining the Red Sox, Pomeranz has gone 1-2 with a 1.44 WHIP and 4.59 ERA. So I just tried to settle down and mix it up a little more.
“Ultimately, their guy was just better tonight”.
Porcello allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight.
The right-handed Fulmer was part of the trade that sent Cespedes from the Tigers to the Mets at last year’s non-waiver trade deadline. “It’s always easier to pitch with a cushion, especially against that offense”.

“Absolutely not. I felt great”.
