Boston College’s Loss To Wake Forest Featured One Of The Most Embarrassing

Boston College’s experimentation with a two-quarterback system may have run its course after coach Steve Addazio showed exasperation following BC’s 3-0 loss to Wake Forest Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Wake Forest (2-3, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) is 20th in the FBS in net yards allowed. “It’s frustrating because all of our team is playing hard and we are all just grinding and we have to get this team to grow up and mature”. That seemed to be the case with freshman kicker Colton Lichtenberg, who followed a missed 45-yard field goal in last week’s 9-7 loss at Duke with two more misses, from 31 (struck the right goalpost) and 26 yards (wide left).

The Golden Eagles first looked poised to tie or take the lead late, driving in Demon Deacons territory before fumbling the ball. But the final minute goes down in incredibly dumbfounding #goacc moments, as both teams tried to give the game away in equal measure.

The Eagles also had a third-and-1 at the Wake Forest 8 with under two minutes left, but Troy Flutie fumbled on a sneak and the ball squirted out of the pile and defensive back Zach Dancel recovered.

The Deacons returned the favor when freshman tailback Matt Colburn was stripped by linebacker Matt Milano. “By the time we got up to the ball there was one second left, so there wasn’t much we could do with it”. Addazio sent in two plays while the clock was stopped to move the chains.

But the game didn’t end until after the clock expired as Boston College, which was out of timeouts, was trying to spike the ball from the 1-yard line to set up either a game-tying kick attempt or a shot at a touchdown.

At least the Eagles can take a few consolation in the fact that they played great defense, and have done so for most of the season, right?

BC fumbled four times, losing three, and had an interception. Addazio said Howell is hurt so he will be limited to punting. “There was not confusion and everything was done appropriately but this is where we are right now. We’re improving in every way except the win column right now, and ultimately that’s what it comes down to”.
