The Miami Marlins have bee slumping and the result is they have dropped to the National League East basement.

2 runs, 2 hits, 1 error, 1 left on.

The name of the game was stranded baserunners in the early going of this one.

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright pitched 5-plus innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits and five walks while striking out four.

“It was a situation to get a double play”.

1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 2 left on.

Bradley led off the third inning with a triple to center field, a well-struck ball that got over the head of Cole Gillespie. He grounded out to Wright and the bases were left juiced. Boston’s Jackie Bradley Jr. started his first career game in left field…. JBJ soared into third with his second triple in as many at-bats.

As if he hadn’t done enough to this point, he singled in his second at-bat of the evening in the top of the fifth, which led to Boston’s second run.

The Red Sox grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth as Marlins fielders began treating baseballs like grenades.

Bradley started in left field for the first time this season and made a spectacular catch in the fourth inning, leaping high at the wall to take extra bases away from Hechavarria.

Red Sox sixth. Bogaerts singled to right.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the sixth inning on a wild pitch by Nicolino and an RBI triple by Rusney Castillo, which ended Nicolino’s outing. He didn’t give up a run when he was in the ballgame, but did not escape unscathed. He then was relieved by Ryan Cook who let both inherited runners score.

The Sox had won seven straight against the Marlins. He would score on a Casey McGehee groundout to make it 4-1 Sox.

Miami’s third biggest star – second baseman Dee Gordon – is still on the field, but he has almost disappeared of late.

The Boston Red Sox haven’t had a whole lot to cheer about this season but have been playing well the past few weeks.

Lovullo went with Tazawa over Jean Machi and Tommy Layne, who each have one save apiece. Sandoval flied out to center fielder Gillespie.

“It was a tremendous team win”, Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. Ogando struck out Hechavarria to end the inning and threat. Who Closes? Who Isn’t bad??

“They didn’t come in and get the job done”, said bench coach Torey Lovullo, who filled in for manager John Farrell, out after undergoing hernia surgery on Monday. He is clearly gassed from too many innings and he blew yet another one.

The Marlins added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, cutting Boston’s lead to 4-3. Tazawa was looking for his first save since 2012, but allowed the Marlins to send the game to extras on a sacrifice fly by Adeiny Hechavarria. Tazawa retired pinch hitter Tomas Telis to keep the game tied, but the damage was done and the ballgame not won. Starter Justin Nicolino allowed all four runs on nine hits through 5.2 innings before five relievers put up zeros.

Mookie Betts returned from a concussion and Hanley Ramirez was held out again with a sore left foot, which presented Jackie Bradley Jr. a chance to play left field last night for the first time since 2013. The odds of the speedster not scoring with no outs on third were very low. Prado was intentionally walked. He scored on a walkoff single by Justin Bour.
