The 31-year-old – scorer of 30 tries in his 67 Tests – suffered a serious knee injury early on in Argentina’s crushing 43-20 victory over the Irish in the World Cup quarter-final earlier this month.

Ireland wing Tommy Bowe will miss this season’s RBS 6 Nations Championship due to a knee injury he suffered during the World Cup quarter-final defeat against Argentina nine days ago.

Ulster also provided updates on injuries sustained by Iain Henderson and Jared Payne during the tournament, with differing news on the duo.

“He [Bowe] had successful surgery to fix the damage yesterday and he will be ruled out for at least six months”, Ulster confirmed on their website on Tuesday.

Jared Payne remains out of action after surgery on a fractured foot.

The 23-year-old was one of Ireland’s best performers in the World Cup but will now have to sit out Ulster’s European Cup matches against Oyonnax, Saracens and back-to-back fixtures with Toulouse before Christmas. However, the province is “awaiting his first post-operative review, after which a prognosis will be known”.
