Bowie to compete in two events in Rio Olympics

The concluding day of the American trials also produced the fastest 400 meters hurdles in the world this year, a run of 52.88 seconds by Dalilah Muhammad, and an upset in the men’s race as 35-year-old Kerron Clement won in 48.50 seconds to make his third Olympic team.

Allyson Felix’s dreams of an Olympic double were dashed by one hundredth of a second here Sunday after an agonizing defeat in the 200 meters at the U.S. track and field trials.

World 100m bronze medallist Bowie bagged her second Olympics spot after her third place in the trials 100m final the weekend before, winning the 200m title in 22.25 ahead of Deajah Stevens with 22.30 and Jenna Prandini, who stumbled over the line in 22.53 to deny Felix, who clocked 22.54 in fourth.

“Honestly, disappointed”, Felix said in an AP report.

“But when I look back and I see everything that happened I think it’s quite incredible I was able to make this team”, said Felix, who will be in the relay pool.

“If everything is on the up and up – and the people who know more than I do say, ‘Yeah, she’s in, ‘ she’s in”. “But it got the job done”. After sitting out 2015 due to a foot injury, she became the first woman since 1998 to take the NCAA 100/200 double.

McLaughlin grew up idolizing Allyson Felix, who finished fourth in the 200 meters and missed out on making the US squad in the event. On Sunday, she wasn’t going to miss her chance. Robbie Andrews finished second in 3:34.88.

“Right now Jenn is the best jumper in the world, and the jump she had today could probably win in Rio”, Rick Suhr said.

Heading into trials, one of the big topics was whether Felix could make the team in both the 200 and 400.

McLaughlin’s time of 54.14 was a junior world record.

In an interview with NJ.com, Sydney McLaughlin admitted that whenever she fails to make to the Olympic Team this year, she already had a game plan.

It happened to Felix plenty over the years, none more heartbreakingly than in Athens and Beijing, where she settled for back-to-back silvers in an event she had dominated. Runner-up Shannon Rowbury also made her third Olympic team, and third-place finisher Brenda Martinez will also go to the Rio Games. “I just want to get out of here”.

Centrowitz joins his father, Matt, as a two-time Olympian. Barbara Nwaba took the heptathlon title.

Erik Kynard, who won the silver medal in the high jump at the London Games, won the event Sunday.

QUOTABLE: “When I give all I have and run 22.5, it’s just not there”. That beats her best-of-the-day qualifying time of 4:10.09 on Friday and her eight overall qualifying time of 4:17.31 on Thursday.
