Bowl preview: Texas Tech vs. LSU a fascinating contrast in styles
LSU and Texas Tech split the first six events with the final event of hay bale stacking serving as deciding event.

The Texas Tech Raiders haven’t exactly had the most successful season, but there is young talent on the roster could be enough to contend in the Big 12 for years to come.
Texas Tech has the No. 1 passing offense in the country, averaging 389.7 yards per game, while LSU has struggled at stopping the pass at times this season. The Tigers ground attack churned out an average of 245.9 yards per game, the best figure in the SEC and ninth-best nationally. Texas Tech coach Kingsbury is aware of the threat. But the players never left him, and we’ll see if they come out firing for their coach.
With two big running backs in Leonard Fournette (230 pounds) and Derrius Guice (222 pounds), LSU will likely have little trouble converting on third-and-short. Leonard Fournette – whose Heisman campaign sunk with his team’s winning streak – should end his sophomore campaign with a big performance.
That sort of production points to an oddity in LSU football the past several years: A team deservedly criticized for an inability to pass routinely puts receivers into the NFL. He’s also rushed for 18 touchdowns, just one shy of tying the school mark of 19 held by LaBrandon Toefield.
“He runs with a good combination of size and speed”, LSU coach Les Miles said. Las Vegas doesn’t think the Red Raiders will beat No. 21 LSU (8-3); a number of Texas sports outlets do. “We’ve spent additional time working on the passing game (in bowl practice)”.
The 2015 Texas Bowl will be a drastic contrast in styles as LSU takes on Texas Tech in Houston. He needs 259 yards to become the first player in SEC history to hit the 2,000-yard rushing mark, something that is not out of the question. His 32-14 TD-INT ratio is pretty good for a first year starter, and it looks even better if you give him a mulligan for his road trip to semifinal participant Oklahoma where he had just on TD with four picks. QB Patrick Mahomes and the Red Raiders are coming off a win over the Texas Longhorns by a 48-45 final score. Texas Tech is ranked among the worst in the nation in rush defense, allowing 271.8 yards per game.
Miles and Kingsbury have faced off before, but it was under much different circumstances and was more than a decade ago.
This should be one of the more entertaining games of bowl season.
“The key is being balanced certainly”, Miles said. Most recently (which, in this case, happens to be the last game they played), the Red Raiders let Texas freshman Charles Warren III get there. The boys from Baton Rouge and Lubbock will look across the field and see something entirely unfamiliar. They finished with a win over Texas A&M, and Miles was carried off the field.
The Red Raiders are 125th in the country in rushing defense. Thankfully, football games aren’t played on paper.
