Bowlsby Doesn’t Believe Big 12 Disadvantaged With 10 Teams

The Big 12 has announced the adoption of a conference-wide limit on football in-season live contact opportunities to no more than two times per week, including game-day, per student-athlete.

When reminded about Oklahoma’s president David Boren declaring in June that the Big 12 conference is disadvantaged in the new playoff system without 12 teams, Bowlsby disagreed.

“I’ve always favored the way it was at one time”, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. “I think it’s the majority of our CEOs right now that believe likewise”. “We need to get better in every single way”. “We have to play better”, Bowlsby said Monday in his annual address to open football media days. “We’ll spend a little time at each meeting discussing it”.

“I don’t believe that we are at a disadvantage relative to the playoff”, Bowlsby said.

That’s interesting, given that Bowlsby estimated that a postseason conference championship game would generate at least $20 million for the conference. Maybe past year was a bit of a fluke that just closed the door on the Big 12, and maybe there is no reason to panic about the sky falling in the old southwest, but the Big 12 needs to get off to a good start this season. We think that gives us a full array of options. One route they are presently pursuing is in seeking a rule change that would deregulate post season play and allow a 10-team conference to have a playoff game.

We could see fresher bodies come the end of November because they haven’t been beating each other up all week in practice. “We think that, properly managed, those kinds of celebrations can be a lot of fun”. Having said that, there isn’t any question that the nonconference schedule of each of our institutions affects the strength of each of the other members of our league.

Bowlsby said the conference has decided not to prohibit court and field storming by fans. “On the other hand, kids that have histories don’t seem to have too much problem finding a place that they can go and play college sports”, he said.

The Big 12 also scrapped the “One True Champion” motto and replaced it with – are you ready for this?
