Opening at number one this weekend is Sully, the Clint Eastwood-directed Tom Hanks-starrer that kicks off this year’s Oscar season.
Sully, the kind of adult-oriented, mid-budget drama that is not supposed to succeed in theatres anymore, at least if you listen to franchise-obsessed studio executives, soared at the box office over the weekend.
USA adult audiences turned out in droves this weekend to see Sully, director Clint Eastwood’s dramatization of the so-called “Miracle on the Hudson”.
With only $10 million to cover, When the Bough Breaks, the thriller of a husband, a wife, and an unstable surrogate mother, did well on its own terms with an estimated $15 million. “They’re already in the profit mode”, Dergarabedian said.
A very quiet week at the global box office as Scully manages to top with just $45 million from 40 counties, $35 of that from America.
It was enough for the based-on-truth drama to nab a dominant first place finish at the domestic box office this weekend.
Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, echoed that sentiment, stressing: “The Perfect Guy’s box office was way beyond anyone’s expectations”.
The film should have legs over the coming weeks as audiences gave it an “A” CinemaScore and now has an 84% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1.
Don’t Breathe stayed in the top five this week, coming in at No. 3 for the weekend with $8.2 million. “Suicide Squad”, $5.7 million ($10.1 million international). 5.
The Wild Life, a Belgium-France animated film, rounded out the Top 5 with a muted $3.3-M opening.
“Kubo and the Two Strings”, from Focus Features and Laika Animation Studios, earned an estimated $3.2 million and sixth place.
