According to studio estimates on Sunday, the anti-hero movie dropped an estimated 67% from its debut last weekend.

With Sausage Party setting an August box office record this past weekend, that sound you hear is doors across Hollywood opening for R-rated animated movies. “It’s a big win for Sony”.

The film took some heat from social justice warriors who said the humor relied too heavily on racist stereotypes. The film features the voices of Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig as anthropomorphic food items seeking the truth about their existence.

ComScore’s Dergarabedian likens the buzz and solid performance to that of “Ted”, which also became a strong earner by turning a seemingly innocent concept very adult.

“Early on, everybody was marginalizing this movie because it looks like this frivolous. concept, but audiences love original content if it’s packaged the right way and if it’s truly amusing”, Dergarabedian says.

I hate to say I told you so, but Suicide Squad fell 67% in its second weekend, much like Batman v Superman’s 69% drop. “And then when something comes along like this, it just solidifies the notion that audiences want something edgy, different – and that creates a conversation”. Sausage Party debuted in second place with an impressive $33.6 million, followed by Pete’s Dragon in third place with $21.5 million while Florence Foster Jeknins debuted in eighth place with $6.5 million. It also has been denied an entry into China, depriving it of as much as $100 million in revenue from the world’s second biggest market for film. Combined with worldwide totals, Pete’s Dragon’s North American cumulative should ride the wave of nostalgia (it’s based on the beloved 1977 film of the same name) up and over its production costs by the end of its run. The movie has earned a domestic total of $222.9 million in two weeks at the box office. It ranks as the second-best opening of Seth Rogan’s starring career (behind only Neighbors’ $49 million start in 2014) and the top August animated opening of all-time, not to mention the top opening for an R-rated animated comedy. Both of those films were in their third weekend of release. The film stars Dale Dickey, Ben Foster and Chris Pine.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $152.9M which was up 18% from past year when Straight Outta Compton opened at number one with $60.2M; and up 22% from 2014 when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stayed in the top spot with $28.M. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. The problem that DC and Warner Bros. have is the stink of failure on their manufactured franchise – again.
