Box Office Weekend: Star Trek Goes Above and Beyond

Star Trek Beyond, the third movie in the rebooted space franchise, proved that by beaming up a hefty $59.6 million in ticket sales this weekend, knocking The Secret Life Of Pets into second place, according to Box Office Mojo.

Domestically, Beyond topped the chart with $59.3 million, which is down on the previous two instalments, with 2009’s Star Trek debuting to $75.2 million and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness opening with $70.2 million. “Pets” fell to second place, adding $29.3 million more to its stellar $260 million earnings over the past three weeks.

Lights Out has gotten some good words from critics, but despite tying Ghostbusters this week with an estimated $21.6 million, the horror flick only cost $4.9 million to make, enjoying profound success on its small budget.

The same can’t be said for 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course”, the fifth installment in the “Ice Age” franchise, which debuted with $21 million.
