The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that it had attended the scene and the missing boy had been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary [RVI] in Newcastle.

The 17-year-boy, who has not been identified, is believed to have been in a dinghy with three friends when he climbed out to swim this afternoon.

It’s thought they had been in a dinghy and then entered the water to swim, subsequently getting into difficulty.

The condition of the rescued male remains unknown.

One onlooker said: “I came by earlier after they pulled him out, they were looking after him for quite a long time, I think he was unconscious for quite a while”.

At least two lifeboats and two helicopters were involved in the hunt for the teenager.
