Two men face murder charges in the fatal shooting of a 4-year-old Southern California boy who was playing with a stuffed animal in his family’s front yard.

Sheriff’s spokesman Adam Cervantes says deputies who responded to reports of gunfire found the seriously injured toddler Wednesday evening in Highland, Calif.

On Thursday, homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses and investigating the scene of the shooting.

Daniels and Kelley were being held at the county’s Central Detention Center on $1 million bail, sheriff’s officials said.

It was not immediately known if either man had a lawyer.

The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Last year, authorities arrested more than 100 people in a crackdown on gangs in the city, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was supposed to go with his family to a theme park that day, but there wasn’t enough space in the van, and relatives told him he could go with them next time.

Daniel and his 5-year-old cousin were playing outside his grandmother’s house at the time, Reina Isabel Hernandez, the boy’s aunt, told The Sun newspaper.
