Boy George pays tribute to hero David Bowie

While several found out David struggled for 18-months with liver cancer, many fans were stunned to learn of the news considering the music man just released his final album Blackstar the previous Friday.

Bowie could sell some 130,000 copies of his recently released “Blackstar” album in the U.S.in the week ending January 14, Billboard reports. The producer had worked with Bowie since the musician’s second studio record, Space Oddity, a career totaling more than 40 years.

Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais, who convinced his long-time idol to star as himself – and ridicule Gervais – in an episode of 2006 sitcom Extras, wrote simply: “I just lost a hero. He said that because he knew that he may not always be able to be around”. “The Music of David Bowie” was billed as a tribute show featuring his songs, but has now been changed to a memorial.

Although “black stars” are usually found in the breast, and can show evidence that the radial scar they form around is benign, rather than cancerous, for many fans the discovery has significance with Bowie’s choice of album title.

Despite being one of the most iconic musicians of all time, in the clip he explains that he only performed because no one else sang his songs.

Sales and downloads of Blackstar, released on the singer’s 69th birthday two days before he died, have soared in the 24 hours since the news of Bowie’s death broke on Monday. Over the last few years – with him living in NY and me in London – our connection was by email. He said: “Sometimes he sent me an email – “I’ve had a bad day” – but he was very close to the whole process”.
