Statoil said they have evaluated all non essential personnel from the Innovator rig, which is now heading to shore under its own steam. A spokesman for Norway’s coast guard tells the BBC that the wave that hit the workers’ accommodation block on the rig must have been around 60 feet high.

Thursday morning saw more than 300 oil workers evacuated after a huge barge broke its moorings and began drifting towards the Valhall and Ekofisk oilfields run by British energy giant BP and United States multinational ConocoPhillips.

Statoil said the rig had been taken off the well because of choppy weather when the wave hit.

The evacuation comes after a severe storm battered the North Sea region over the last 24 hours, resulting in an unmanned barge breaking free from its moorings, which is now being blown directly towards the Valhall platform in heavy seas.

The evacuees were transported by rescue helicopters from Stavanger Sola Airport.

“We are trying to get a complete picture of the situation and what has happened”.
