Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. went 0-for-4, snapping his 29-game hitting streak, which was the longest in the majors this year.

“It was a tough assignment”.

“It’s incredible”, said Colorado manager Walt Weiss, “especially in this day and age”.

The hitting streak has reached eighteen games and counting. There’s just no gameplan for Bradley that doesn’t involve a couple unsafe pitches, and given that he’s hitting.391/.400/.565 even when he puts the first pitch in play, there’s no safe time to throw said risky pitches.

“I smacked a line drive right up the middle so hard that it passed (Yankees pitcher Vic) Raschi’s ear!” Bradley’s streak ended with a whimper when he went 0 for 4 and was flummoxed by young Rockies starter Jon Gray after he moved up to the leadoff spot for the first time this season.

In the top of the ninth, Tommy Layne gave up a double to Garneau and a single to LeMahieu, bringing in Colorado’s 8th run of the night. Unfortunately, he grounded out to end the game.

Gray was unfazed by the shuffle.

Buchholz left to a cascade of boos with one out in the sixth, having surrendered six runs and seven hits, including the three home runs. He got Bradley out by mixing in some changeups, which Bradley later acknowledged caught him off guard. A lot of the guys were, ” Gray said. “For me personally, it makes me pitch better”.

Buchholz kept the Rockies’ bats quiet for three frames before Gonzalez unloaded on a 2-1 pitch in the fourth for a game-tying, two-run homer – his first in nine games. He flied out to centre in the fifth.

Struggling Bryce Harper hopes to get some pitches to hit when the Nationals host the Cardinals for a four-game set.

“I got the barrel to it, so it felt pretty good”, Garneau said.
