Anonymous hackers from Fancybear.net web portal announced on Tuesday that they have hacked the database of WADA’s ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration & Management System) and leaked documents proving that the doping agency allowed Serena and Venus as well as United States four-time Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles and compatriot women’s basketball player Elena Dolle Donne to take banned performance-enhancing drugs, reports Tass. They relate mainly to exceptions given to competitors to take drugs that are normally banned because of medical conditions.

The anti-doping agency said the hackers were operating from Russian Federation.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the hackers published a new batch of documents on their website containing “confidential athlete data of 25 athletes, from eight countries, into the public domain”, reports Tass.

There is no suggestion any of the athletes broke any rules.

They’re expected to make more athletes’ information public in the future, releasing the data “in batches”, WADA said.

“WADA is very mindful that this criminal attack, which to date has recklessly exposed personal data of 29 athletes, will be very distressing for the athletes that have been targeted and cause apprehension for all athletes that were involved in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”, Niggli said. “Everyone knows Brad suffers from asthma; his medical treatment is BC (British Cycling) and UCI (International Cycling Union) approved”.

The latest batch of documents suggest that three-time Tour de France victor Froome had a TUE for prednisolone, which is used to treat a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, for five days in May 2013 at the Critérium du Dauphiné and seven days in April 2014 during the Tour of Romandie.

The hacking group, known as APT28 and Fancy Bear by USA cyber-security researchers, was also blamed by WADA on Tuesday for posting data about US athletes Simone Biles, Elena Delle Donne, and Serena and Venus Williams.

“The targeted athletes include 10 from the United States, five from Germany, five from Great Britain, one from the Czech Republic, one from Denmark, one from Poland, one from Romania, and one from Russian Federation”.

He said the hack on Wada’s computer system constituted “retaliation” against the agency, which imposed heavy penalties against Russian Federation over doping, including banning practically its entire athletics team from the Rio Olympics. We are Fancy Bears’ global hack team.

“To those athletes that have been impacted, we regret that criminals have attempted to smear your reputations in this way”, said Mr Niggli.

The Russian government has denied any involvement.

Legendary American tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams had a special therapeutic permission to take drugs banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and didn’t violate anti-doping regulations, International Tennis Federation (ITF) President David Haggerty has said. This morning we spoke to all those already affected, and are in the process of contacting others who we believe are most likely to be at risk, to provide them with additional support.
