Brady on Manning: Pressure is probably finally off him

The Denver Broncos are holding a press conference at noon Monday where Peyton Manning is expected to officially announce his retirement. Manning and his younger brother, Eli-whom Cutcliffe also coached in his younger days and has two Super Bowl wins of his own with the New York Giants-have come to Durham on a regular basis for offseason workouts with numerous receivers on their current teams.

One of the game’s most prolific passers, he was voted the NFL’s most valuable player a record five times.

Manning led the Colts out with the first possession of the second half, but at the 12:28 mark Packers safety Nick Collins jumped a Manning pass and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown. The 5-time MVP won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts and Super Bowl 50 this past season with the Denver Broncos.

Manning also earned four MVP awards, including the highly prestigious Super Bowl XLI event, before moving to Denver Broncos as a free agent in 2012.

“Peyton Manning was awesome for the city and I think him going to the Broncos was great for him”.

I, for one, won’t miss watching Peyton manhandle the Chiefs each season. Thursday was different. We had our work as a team.

The Broncos have worked diligently to construct a deal for Brock Osweiler, who has spent all four of his seasons in the National Football League as Manning’s backup for the Broncos.

Manning said if there’s one thing he learned in his most trying season was how to be a good teammate in trying times.

Now that he’s retired, one of the most recognizable faces in the sports world ostensibly has his pick of post-playing career diversions.

“I’ll miss the handshakes with Tom Brady, I’ll even miss those Patriot fans in Foxborough”, said Manning, adding with a smile: “And they should miss me, they sure did get a lot of wins off me”.

In an interview three years ago, Manning’s college quarterbacks coach, David Cutcliffe, spoke about one of the first plays any Tennessee player had to learn when they arrived in Knoxville in the 1990s. He had to adjust to new coach Gary Kubiak’s run-based offense, to unrelenting health issues, and to questions about his character on his way to winning his second Super Bowl title.

Famed quarterback Peyton Manning will leave the NFL with scores of football records and household name recognition. “I am a Peyton Manning fan- huge Peyton Manning fan and I think I always will be”. I knew he felt like it was time, that he was ready to play, that he was in the right place.

“It’s been a treat for an ex-quarterback to watch Peyton Manning play the game”. Manning had the biggest day by an NFL QB in 44 years, throwing seven touchdown passes in directing Denver’s 49-27 rout of the Baltimore Ravens, who had upset Denver in double overtime in the playoffs seven months earlier.

He had previously led the team to scoring and yardage records, but threw two first-half interceptions and was confounded by Seattle’s league-best defensive unit.

“He redefined preparation”, Cutcliffe said.

The Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers was indeed his last rodeo. “Simply put, he revolutionized NFL football”. But Peyton made everybody around him better, whether you were on his team or competing against him. Despite winning 68% of the games he played, lost in that statistic is a surprisingly inefficient playoff record of just 14-13.
