It happened around 5 p.m.at East Third Street near the off-ramp of Interstate 277.

A 1987 Ford F-150 was passing through the intersection during a red light when it was struck by the CATS bus.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed on a freeway off-ramp when it swerved to avoid traffic stopped at a signal.

Police said the bus hit the driver side of the pickup, which then caused a chain reaction crash, and the bus hit another auto. It was the second death involving CATS bus crashes in less than a week. The names of the drivers, the person who died and those injured had not been released, as of late Monday.

Police believe the pickup may have experienced a brake system failure before the collision.

The passenger of the truck, 59-year-old Gloria McMenamy-Moreno, and the CATS bus driver, 58-year-old Priscilla Chisolm, suffered minor injuries.

The bus was carrying 19 passengers; 13 were taken to CMC reporting minor injuries.

Bus drivers are tested for drugs and alcohol after every crash, said CATS spokeswoman Krystel Green, but the results from the drivers involved in the two deadly crashes were not available Monday.

CATS said the bus driver has been placed on paid leave while police continue to investigate.
