Stripling got Ortiz to ground out with two men on in the first inning, and then got him to fly out to end the third.
“Those were big hits”, Price said of Segedin’s clutch hits.
McCarthy was a late fill-in for left-hander Rich Hill, who still hasn’t recovered from a finger blister.
McCarthy isn’t quite right, either. Four of his pitches sailed to the backstop.
Stripling allowed four hits and a walk, striking out four. He does not throw a consistent 95 miles per hour fastball, but he can win games.
“For me it took four entrances and three wrong turns to get here, but I made it”, Reddick said. When asked what those were, Roberts said: “I don’t know”.
Price certainly is not expressing an ounce of satisfaction with much of this inconsistent and unreliable debut season with his new team. It was the first time on the trip that Boston was shut out but not the first time the offense struggled.
