Snedeker had posted a three-under 69 in wind and rain on the South Course at Torrey Pines on Sunday, before play was suspended because of weather.

Walker was on seven-under after 10 holes and is in front of American compatriot Brandt Snedeker and South Korea’s K.J. Choi, who are in a tie for second on six-under. He’s a confident putter though and always gets the ball past the hole with a chance to make a birdie.

“You can not imagine”, Snedeker said, “what was going through my head, just because of the weather conditions and what the forecast was for today”. He promptly dropped a shot with a bogey a the first and had another bogey at the fourth, before recovering with a birdie at the sixth, which put him in the lead at eight-under.

He was on the practice green, not the 18th green.

His performance on Sunday was impressive for a number of reasons, from the difficulty of the course to the conditions on it. Snedeker evaluated his own showing following the round.

“Those last 30 minutes were kind of killing me”, said Snedeker, who also won this tournament in 2012.

“But that chip shot will probably be weighing on my mind”, Snedeker said.

The TV cameras had not been focusing on the world No 24 until four birdies in a five-hole stretch along the back nine significantly cut the gap on the leaders, before Snedeker held firm as the winds worsened at Torrey Pines.

Snedeker had been simply sensational on Sunday when gusting winds and spells of driving rain forced three delays and pushed scores up at Torrey Pines north of San Diego, California. After missing a 15-foot par putt on the opening hole, Snedeker bore down and kept his round from getting away by knocking in a 35-foot par putt on the fourth hole that runs along the ocean, and then a 15-foot par putt on the next hole. Ultimately, Snedeker was the only player to shoot below par in the final round, while the only other player to shoot par at all was Robert Streb. Among 13 players back at Sentosa Golf Club at the break of dawn after the final round was suspended because of a thunderstorm, Spieth completed a final round of 5-under 66 to finish at 11-under 273.

“I couldn’t do it again”.

JB Holmes and Jonas Blixt ended the week in a tie for sixth on two under, with Billy Horschel part of the group a further stroke off the pace.

This time, he got some help from the elements.

Needing an eagle to force a playoff, the third-ranked Lewis parred the par-5 18th for a 68.
