Wendy Tsao started her “Mighty Doll” project back in September.

A Bratz doll that was repurposed to look like a young Jane Goodall.

Indeed, with her considerable skills, Tsao has morphed dolls that look like they’re ready for an evening at a nightclub into figures of accomplished women, such as girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai and a young version of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. So far her recreations include Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar, scientist Jane Goodall, author and activist Waris Dirie, artist Frida Kahlo, author J.K. Rowling and activist Malala Yousafzai. Over 8,000 people liked and 650 shared a single Facebook post about the dolls from the Malala Fund page. I don’t know the answer to this question. “We need to show children that these remarkable women were once children, too”.

When creating a doll, Tsao takes into account the appearance of the original Bratz doll, including its hair and skin tone, and considers “possible inspiring female role models that would suit those parameters”.

The pre-owned dolls are washed with hot water and soap, and Tsao designs their clothes and makes their tops. New Bratz dolls are heading to toy stores after a federal court overturned a ruling that their maker, MGA Entertainment, had to turn over the rights to the brand to Mattel Inc.

According to her website, Tsao, who also takes commissions, will be auctioning the newly fashioned dolls on eBay. It’s hard to imagine feeling the same the about Malala [Yousafzai].
