Brazil charges IOC’s Hickey, 9 more on ticket scalping case

A ticket touting ring uncovered at the Rio Games had operated for around 8 years and was preparing for other Olympic events such as the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games, two Rio de Janeiro police sources said Wednesday.

Mr Bach cancelled a planned appearance in Rio this week at the opening of the Paralympic Games, for personal reasons.

However, the International Olympic Committee insisted they are ready to fully cooperate with Brazilian police, but say they have had no request for testimony from them.

The IOC has promised to co-operate with Brazilian authorities in the ticket-touting investigation.

“We want to question Thomas Bach as a witness because he features in the emails and we want to clear up certain uncertainties”, Oliveira told a news conference.

Hickey, 71, was arrested on August 17 and held in jail until a judge granted him conditional release on August 29. The IOC said Tuesday that Bach had to attend the official state mourning ceremony for Walter Scheel, the former West Germany president.

They also indicated that they wish to speak to other individuals as part of their inquiries, including IOC President Thomas Bach.

They said the warrant that is sought relates to spreadsheets found on Mr Burke’s hard drive, which they claim connect him to the alleged mis-selling of tickets.

He was set free last week after a judge ruled that he wasn’t a risk to the investigation.

Police have said that Hickey plotted with businessmen to transfer tickets illegally from a sports company called Pro 10 to hospitality provider THG Sports, which was a non-authorized vendor and allegedly sold them for very high fees.

Detective Aloysio Falcao, one of the lead investigators in the case, said that Martin Burke would be charged along with Pat Hickey, Kevin Mallon, and seven other men said to have been involved in the ticketing scheme.

Pat Hickey, who has temporarily stepped aside as OCI president, arrived to give further testimony to Civil Police in Rio this evening at 15.24pm local time, (7.24pm Irish time). “Only the Brazilian prosecutor can press charges and he has not done so”.

International Olympic Committee officials said Mr Bach would now not travel to Brazil after the funeral because he was unable to reschedule other commitments.

Hickey had been jailed in Rio’s notorious Bangu prison since his August 10 arrest, but was allowed to leave just over a week ago on condition that he remain in Brazil.
