That gold medal is still lacking on the Brazil honours list despite five runners-up places at the Olympics heading into this year’s tournament, slated to kick off on August 4. Both games were played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. Japan, finalists in the last two Women’s World Cups and the 2012 Olympics, did not qualify. They will also have two friendlies in July against an opponent and sites that have not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, the players and the United States Soccer Federation are battling through contentious negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement, a labor war that escalated further when the players filed a federal gender discrimination complaint.

Brazil, who have been world champions at every level bar the Olympics, begin their campaign against South Africa in Brasilia, one of six host cities for the competition.

Brazil will face China, Sweden and South Africa in Group E, while Germany will play Canada, Zimbabwe and Australia in Group G. If they were to finish second in the group, they’d likely play Germany, ranked second in the world, in the quarterfinals.

Japan’s absence means the Americans will be even more heavily favored to win gold August 19 at the Maracana, but the US has plenty to sort out before it gets to Brazil.
