Authorities had pulled Conger and Bentz off a plane about to leave Brazil for questioning related to the story but were later released after the pair retracted those claims.

Lochte has since acknowledged that he was heavily intoxicated and that his behavior led to the confrontation.

Lochte later admitted to the network that he understood that money was being asked to pay the damage or the police would be called. Each swimmer was let go after cooperating, but Lochte is now stateside and could face an 18-month prison sentence if he returns to Brazil to face the charge. Details of the charge might also be sent to the International Olympic Committee, which has formed an ethics committee to investigate the gas station incident.

Under Brazilian law, the penalty for falsely filing a crime report carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison. Feigen spoke to his attorneys and rejected the deal, and the fine was then upped to almost $47,000 before the two sides agreed on$10,800.

Lochte’s attorney, Jeffrey Ostrow, said Lochte has not heard from officials in Rio.

Brazil and the United States have a long-standing extradition treaty, which Brazil has often failed to honor, refusing to extradite its citizens to the USA when charged.

Lochte later lost lucrative sponsor deals- after being dropped by Speedo USA, Ralp Lauren, mattress company Airweave USA and hair removal company Syneron Candela.

Organizers for the Wizard World Comic Con say the 12-time Olympic medal victor will greet fans, sign autographs and pose for selfies with fans at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on September 10.

Lochte, who has won 12 Olympic medals, second only to Michael Phelps, among United States male Olympians, on Thursday, picked up a new sponsorship deal with Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops.

In a tweet on Thursday, Lochte said: “Thanks to all the folks at Pine Bros for your confidence in me”. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
