Brazil police ready formal accusation in Irish ticket scandal

Patrick Hickey will be accused, along with Kevin Mallon, a director of worldwide sports hospitality company THG Sports, with scalping, ambush marketing and criminal association, said Rio de Janeiro police chief Ricardo Barbosa on Tuesday (NZT).

“We have vast amounts of documentary proof and our investigation will wind up on Thursday”, Barbosa said. “So the fact that he did not speak does not invalidate and does not hinder the other evidence we have already collected”.

Hickey, who has stepped down from all of his sporting roles on a temporary basis, is facing charges of facilitating ticket touting, forming a cartel and illicit marketing.

Mallon met with civil police investigators this evening in Rio de Janeiro having been released from Bangu on bail late last month following a Supreme Court ruling in Brasília.

“But since then the police have made several enquiries, searches, seizures, important material was collected”.

Police said they did not believe Paralympic tickets were scalped by the ring. “We don’t know what Bach’s response was, so that’s why we want to hear from him”.

The court ordered Hickey and Mallon, who have had their passports confiscated and been told to remain in Brazil, to appear at a Rio court on the 20th of every month and to obey a 10 p.m. house arrest curfew.

Last Monday, a judge ordered Hickey’s release from prison, citing his “critical health condition”.

Both are staying at apartments in the city while the investigation continues.

“The IOC can not comment on a newspaper story nor on the ongoing legal procedure against Mr. Hickey for whom the presumption of innocence prevails”, the IOC said in a statement to The Associated Press. “Due to my medical condition, I will be making no further statements”.

The OCI head was arrested on August 17 during the games in his Rio hotel room. After spending a night in hospital, he was remanded to the notorious Bangu 10 jail.

The THG boss was arrested in Rio on August 5, after being found in possession of 823 tickets for the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee promised to co-operate Wednesday with Brazilian authorities in the ticket scalping investigation that has targeted one of its executive board members.
