Ireland’s top Olympic official Pat Hickey has been charged by a judge in Brazil, in relation to illegal ticket sales involving senior irish Olympic officials.
Judge Juliana Leal de Melo, of the special Olympic court in Rio de Janeiro, reached a decision late last night after receiving the case file earlier in the week.
They are required to observe a curfew from 10pm each night and are also prohibited from attending any events at the Paralympics.
Except for Hickey and Mallon, all of them are outside the country and are now considered fugitives. The judge said that any breach of the precautionary measures will be “preventive detention”.
The International Olympic Committee said it has not received any request from Brazilian police for information concerning an investigation into a ticket-scalping scheme during the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Also charged with Mr Hickey and Mr Mallon are co-defendants Michael Glynn, Ken Murray, Eamonn Collins, Maarten Van Os, David Patrick Gilmore, Martin Studd, and Barbara Zancope Carnieri.
Should they violate the terms of house arrest, Hickey and Mallon could return to jail, the court warned.
A Brazilian judge has cited concerns over the 71-year olds’ health.
