Brazil Prison Break: 40 Inmates Escape After Wall Blown Up
Globo television’s Internet portal G1 says 36 of those who escaped during Saturday afternoon’s jailbreak have been recaptured.

This dramatic footage captures the moment 40 prisoners escape a jail in Brazil after blowing up an external wall and making a run for it.
One prisoner died in hospital and another death was reported to be from a bullet to the neck, according to the newspaper.
The inmates escaped from the Frei Damiao de Bozanno prison on Saturday, January 23, when one of the walls was destroyed by explosives.
The most alarming part of the footage, which emerged today, is the desperate rush of men clambering over a razor wire fence in order to reach the pierced perimeter wall.
Most prison escapes are elaborate, secretive affairs; not so the crude dash from Frei Damião de Bozzano jail.
Escape attempts are frequent at Pernambuco prisons, the most overcrowded in Brazil.
According to reports, prisons in the state are often run by electing inmates to maintain security alongside the guard, with this particular complex housing four times the number of prisoners it was built for.
A 2015 Human Rights Watch study revealed that prison facilities designed for 10,500 inmates hold around 32,000 people.

Newsweek reports that because of staff shortages only half of the prison’s observation towers were being manned when the explosion occurred.
