The crime came to light after several accused joked about the attack online, posting graphic photos and videos of the unconscious, naked teen lying on floor and shared picture on Twitter.

The Rio police are now investigating the report filed by the girl against 30 men who drugged and raped her last weekend, including her 19-year-old boyfriend.

The video of the rape was first seen in Brazilian social media Tuesday.

Brazilians protest in front of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (ALERJ) on May 27, 2016, against a gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl. Brazilian newspaper O Globo notes that police estimate 12 people are raped every day in Rio de Janeiro, about one rape every two hours.

One woman said she rejected “macho culture” and “turning a women into a sexual object”.

“I want to speak directly and plainly to the guys I know and they know who they are”. But as the media here keeps silent on the Rio case and one more gang-rape reported in the state of Piaui last week, it’s coming under severe criticism from all quarters. “I can only hope that this act can bring awareness to women and men about the need for this fight, so the violence against women can end”, she said. Violence against women is a huge problem in the country.

Local media quoted her grandmother as saying boyfriend felt she had cheated on him and had taken revenge.

“Once more I reiterate my condemnation of violence against women”, she wrote on Facebook.

He said the authorities were working “to find those responsible” for the attack.

For Brazil’s interim government, headed by Michel Temer, the crime could not have happened at a worse time. About US$550 million was slashed this year from the budget for police and special forces that heavily patrol the favelas, despite heavy spending on the upcoming Olympic Games.

“I regretted watching it”, she said. A partnered study in 2014 between the Institute for Applied Economic Research and the United Nations Women’s Brazil branch discovered that nearly two-thirds of respondents thought a woman dressed provocatively deserves to be raped, reported Al Jazeera. NBC Olympics said it would distribute the 4K coverage, provided by Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and Japan’s NHK, to US distribution partners, who will individually choose how they will make the content available to customers.
