Brazil’s Suspended Leader Says Impeachment is a Coup
Rousseff, who is accused of using illegal accounting methods to mask a growing government budget deficit, denies any wrongdoing. Even the head of the Senate and the man who oversaw the impeachment vote, Renan Calheiros, is the subject of 11 criminal probes.

“I am the victim of a great injustice”, Rousseff said Thursday in what some believe could prove to be her final speech. Her support has tanked alongside the economy.
It also hinted that suspended president Dilma Rousseff may have hid the true state of the damage her policies caused to the public accounts.
In an interview earlier Friday on the Globo TV network, he said the country needs to fix age limits for retirement. “Until she leaves definitively, which should be the Senate’s decision, her rights as suspended president must be assured”, Temer said. If two-thirds of the 81 senators vote to find her guilty, Temer will serve out the remainder of her term, which ends in December 2018. He was on the ticket with Rousseff in 2014 when she allegedly fudged the numbers on Brazil’s budget.
Rousseff was stripped of her powers on Thursday after losing a preliminary impeachment vote in the Senate. Investors have cheered the path to Rousseff’s impeachment trial, hoping for a more market-friendly regime.
The Senate trial will be overseen by the chief justice of the Supreme Federal Tribunal, Ricardo Lewandowski.
“We, 15 months ago suffered all sorts of sabotage against our governance”, she said.
What’s expected of fill-in Temer? .
He said Brazil was still a poor nation and that he would protect and expand social programmes.
The Guardian reports on Michel Temer’s first acts as President of Brazil, noting his appointment of an “all-male, conspicuously white cabinet to run one of the world’s most ethnically diverse nations”.
Henrique Meirelles, a former central bank governor who has been given the job of trying to haul Latin America’s biggest economy out of recession, said his top priority was to return transparency to public finances.
“We are certainly paying close attention to developments in Brazil”.
That’s when Brazilians learned that the six-month process to remove the center-left Workers’ Party from the presidency for the first time in 13 years had finally been successful.
What about cleaning up corruption? . First, she has not been implicated in any corruption case.
Temer has been implicated by witnesses in the scandal, but he has not been charged. Many worry that he’ll try to weaken the investigation.
Rousseff has described the opposition move as a “coup” and vowed to fight on through legal challenges.
“Let’s work instead”, he said.
In Brasilia, the capital and epicentre of the political crisis, several dozen women also protested against Temer and managed to invade the access ramp to the Planalto presidential palace during his investiture ceremony.
Opponents say the administration’s maneuvering of funds was illegal and an attempt to mask problems that exacerbated the recession, such as huge budget gaps that have surfaced over the a year ago.
