The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has reportedly tested over 2,470 mosquito samples for the virus since May.
After returning to her home near Kuala Lumpur, the woman fell ill and was diagnosed with “suspected” Zika, based on a urine test.
As of Thursday, 115 have been infected by the Zika virus in Singapore, rising from Monday’s figure of 41.
This is similar to its approach to dengue cases, NEA said.
“We have also conducted checks and are monitoring the people with whom the woman has come into contact with to find out whether they have also developed symptoms of the disease”, he said.
Countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines are the ones particularly at risk of widespread Zika transmission due to their limited resources to handle such a public health emergency.
There are two major complications associated with the virus, which appears to be more common among women.
The research team, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Oxford University and the University of Toronto, Canada, said “vast numbers” of people were living in environments where it would be hard to prevent, detect and respond to the virus.
Although Zika was first identified in 1947, the virus wasn’t considered a major health threat until a major outbreak in Brazil past year revealed that Zika can lead to severe birth defects when pregnant women are infected.
According to the article, the virus is linked to microcephaly, which can result in babies being born with smaller than normal heads and abnormally developed brains.
Dr Piyasakol also explained that Zika was not new to Thailand.
In his letter, Buchanan also warned of “fertile breeding ground” created by heavy storm rainfall for Zika-carrying mosquitoes.
“As the Zika virus epidemic in the Americas intensifies and expands, hundreds, and possibly thousands, of infected travellers are now transporting the virus to distant regions of the world”, the researchers wrote.
Sering Ukay Residents Association chairman Datuk Mohammed Arshad Raji said the authorities should start an awareness campaign on Zika for the benefit of the public.
‘It’s pretty obvious that there is a clear relationship, ‘ lead author Dr Marcos Espinal, director of communicable diseases at the Pan American Health Organization, said.
