According to The Guardian, Modi described the solar alliance as “the sunrise of new hope, not just for clean energy but for villages and homes still in darkness, for mornings and evening filled with a clear view of the glory of the sun”.

Industry was represented at Monday’s launch ceremony by France’s solar leader Engie, whose CEO Gerard Mestrallet said the energy form was already cost competitive without subsidies in some regions. The aim is to reach capacity of 100 gigawatts by 2022, to be scaled up further in the future.

“With the U.S. and China joining India, along with over 100 other nations, to support this solar alliance on the first day of the UN climate negotiations, the majority of greenhouse gas emitters are demonstrating tremendous leadership to develop sustainably while curbing climate change”, said Jing Jing Qian, China Programme Director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. The opening session was attended by various heads of states/Governments including the President of the United States of America (USA), Prime Minister of United Kingdom (David Cameroon), President of France Francois Hollande, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Modi said, “Our society should take up the responsibility of reforming itself and discarding incorrect practices of past”. “The principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities must remain the bedrock of our collective enterprise”.
