Brees, Saints agree to contract extension

The wait is over for the New Orleans Saints, its fans, and quarterback Drew Brees.

The second-year quarterback completed just 55.7 percent of his passes this season for 409 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions, and with Brees close to signing an extension with the Saints, New Orleans made a decision to free up Grayson’s roster spot. The deal includes $44.25 million guaranteed, per multiple reports.

He adds: “Brees now counts $30 million against the Saints’ salary cap – almost 20 percent of their available funds”. Brees could decide he wants to continue playing at the end of the deal, but in the meantime, his cap number lowers signifcantly this season to potentially offer New Orleans some flexibility to build around him over the next two seasons.

The New Orleans Saints may have to get Samuel L. Jackson on the phone because the deadline to get a new deal with all-world QB Drew Brees is nearing.

If that is the case, then Saints may not want to hear this – we may be in for a very long season.

“Both sides are very happy and certainly I’m very happy”, said Brees.

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Saints have signed Brees to a five-year deal, but it can be automatically voided to two years.

Four days before embarking upon yet another season in the National Football League, the New Orleans Saints have secured the services of one of the most productive players in the history of the franchise.

However, the Saints have not been going strong, with back-to-back 7-9 seasons. He’s racked up 48,555 passing yards and 348 touchdown passes – the most of any quarterback in any 10-year span, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Brees’s contract with the Saints will be done after the season and despite being 37, teams like the Dallas Cowboys or Denver Broncos can steal him from the Saints.

“Like I always said, these contract situations are just part of the process”, Brees said, via NFL Network.

“I plan to play for longer than two years”, Brees told the media after announcing his extension.

This summer, Brees stated that he believes he can play at an elite level at least another five years. Another team might have backed up the money truck for Brees next spring. He’s the lone quarterback to generate a QBR score of 70 or higher in each of the past three seasons.

“The thing we’re all aligned on is what puts this team in the best position to win and the best position to win a championship”, Brees said.
