Brendan Rodgers: Ultimately for us the aim is to win today’s game

Ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby at Everton, Rodgers insists the scrutiny is not having an adverse effect on his squad.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers branded the 1-1 Europa League draw with Sion as “disappointing” but admitted his side only had themselves to blame for the result.

He said: “It’s not something I look for”.

“But I immensely enjoy the job here”.

However, Martinez has suggested expectation should be on Brendan Rodgers’ men due to what they have paid out in the transfer market. I will always work with the players and the situation I am in. We didn’t do that well enough and we conceded a soft goal.

“We had a number of chances throughout the match and you’ve got to be clinical”, said Rodgers.

“Then we made a stupid mistake – as happens in football – but you get punished hard when you are in Europe”.

Fifth placed Everton have not beaten Liverpool in their past nine league meetings, but have never gone 10 games without a win against their neighbours in the Premier League. “We are very happy with the point we gained here”, he said.

“We will review where he is at the end of the season”. They want to win as much as we want to win, so there’s probably a wee bit of frustration there when you don’t win the game.

For the section of Liverpool support who are already fed up with their club’s current boss, his comments following the aforementioned Thursday night European game will come as little comfort.

“Away in Bordeaux, there were a lot of young players playing that were getting great experience, but we’re still going up in the games”.

The Northern Irishman urged frustrated fans to be patient and admitted their criticism is something the team must “take on the chin”. We have missed him over a long period of time. “When we get those back we know we have a squad to challenge”.
