These precautions include wearing mosquito repellant and postponing unnecessary travel to areas with active local transmission of the Zika virus among pregnant women, who can pass on the infection to their unborn children, said Garin.

Diagnosis of the virus is typically confirmed with a blood test. In the past, there have also been reports of patients developing Guillain-Barré syndrome following a Zika virus infection.

Almost all cases in the continental United States have been limited to infected travelers who brought the virus back home from Latin America or other regions.

As we all know by now that Zika virus infection is linked to mosquito bites, people have become more cautious of mosquito bites to prevent Zika infection. CDC recommends men traveling to areas where virus is actively transmitted by mosquitoes to either abstain from having sex with a pregnant partner, or properly use a condom for the duration of the pregnancy.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning pregnant women and those planning to soon be pregnant against going to the Olympic and Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August and September. “For the people who live here in New Mexico the risk for Zika, exposure and infection, are for those who travel to these areas”, said Dr. Arguello.

“We believe it’s the most comprehensive and most aggressive plan that has been designed in the country”, Cuomo said at a Manhattan news conference.

The confirmation was administered with a dose of caution, reminding residents that with a few exceptions, the virus has mild effects. At least 18 cases, including four in Florida, are among pregnant women.

The virus can cause Microcephaly in infants, which is a potentially life-threatening birth defect that results in the baby having a smaller head than expected.

Cuba was one of a handful of countries that had previously only reported cases contracted while traveling overseas.

It is mainly transmitted through bites from the same kind of mosquitoes that can spread other tropical diseases, like dengue fever, chikungunya and yellow fever.

Trials using modified mosquitoes have been taking place in the Cayman Islands
