Brewers finish off sweep of Pirates

Jonathan Lucroy waved his helmet to acknowledge a standing ovation at Miller Park and, in what could be his final appearance for the Milwaukee Brewers, flied out as a pinch hitter Sunday in a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Brewers are 12th of 15 teams in the NL in runs scored and in the middle of the pack in ERA as they prepare for the trade deadline on August 1. “I think when it eventually comes out, I think you’ll understand why.”… “I thought he pitched like he deserved to, and I don’t think he was tiring or anything like that”.

“I was good either way”, he said.

Liriano allowed four runs in five innings and the Pirates got just five hits in a 4-2 loss to the Brewers on Sunday for their ninth straight defeat in Milwaukee. “I’m pretty confident I owned him in the minor leagues”. Taillon explained he saw first baseman Chris Carter turn and watch the play, showing no sense of urgency, and “next thing I knew I was hosed at first”.

“We come in here, what did we get, six runs?” manager Clint Hurdle said. “They pitched better, we still had pitches to hit”.

Hernan Perez hit a two-run homer, singled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, Zach Davies pitched 6 1/3 innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Thursday.

“I used to be a little chunky when I really young”, Taillon told reporters, “so they’re saying it reminds me of watching me play when I was little”. Pirates LF Sterling Marte is on a six-game hitting streak, the least three of which are multi-hit games. Starter Chase Anderson (6-10) would earn the win after giving up an unearned run in five innings, while Jeremy Jeffress closed the ninth despite giving up a run for his 26th save.

Pirates: RHP Ryan Vogelsong made his fourth rehab start Wednesday.

Perez, moved up to the No. 3 spot when Ryan Braun was scratched from the lineup with tightness in his right side, finished with three hits and three RBIs. Brewers manager Craig Counsell hopes to have Braun back Saturday. Jameson Taillon gets the nod, and he’s 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 31 strikeouts this season.

Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole (6-6, 2.78 ERA) will try to build upon his first professional complete game when he starts against Atlanta on Tuesday. He allowed one run on five hits over six innings July 19 against the Brewers.
