Brewers take series from Cubs

Where did the Cubs’ 6-runs-a-game offense go those first two games in Milwaukee? The 11 strikeouts were also a season high for a Brewers pitcher, and the most since Mike Fiers struck out 10 on July 23, 2015, at Arizona.

Chase Anderson’s task Tuesday night was to be better than the best, and he was up to the challenge.

The Brewers beat the Cubs 5-3 Thursday afternoon, taking the series 2-1.

The Cubs came in with a major-league leading 27-9 mark, but Anderson used near flawless execution to hold them down.

“With a guy pitching that well, that’s where I got to really buckle down and keep us in it, one or two runs is all”, Hendricks said. Over his seven starts and 5-0 record, Hammel has been magnificent on a 1.77 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 40.2 total innings.

Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant spoiled Anderson’s shutout with solo homers in the ninth. Nieuwenhuis singled to left, advanced from first to third on a walk and then on a throwing error by Montero, scored on a wild pitch. Zobrist has been dynamite for the Cubs.

Jeremy Jeffress got the final out for his 11th save.

Astros 6, White Sox 5: Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer to win it in the 11th. We saw it last night/early this morning when, sandwiched between a bases loaded walk issued to pitcher Travis Wood, the Brewers failed on three separate occasions in the final two innings to score a runner on third base with less than two outs. Braun had back surgery in the offseason, and manager Craig Counsell has said the 32-year-old slugger might need periodic days off for rest. “I think Chase has been off at times just a little bit, but tonight, he put it together”. He ended up allowing one hit over seven innings in a 1-0 win.

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon looks up at the sun during the third inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 19, 2016, in Milwaukee. The Brewers are 7-4 in one-run games. 248 against him (26-for-105) with two home runs. One such chance was when the Brewers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, yet failed to generate the winning run.

Cano went 3 for 4 on Tuesday while Cruz went yard and drove in five runs and Seager added a three-run homer. They slipped to 15-4 against the NL Central, but have gone 22-4 in their last 26 regular-season road games. Either way, “I’ll remember this game for a very long time”, Bryant said. RHP Matt Garza (right lat), who has yet to play this season, threw his first bullpen session. Garza has missed 38 games and Knebel 39. The pitcher entered the game 1-5 with a 5.23 ERA in eight starts this season, having not won a decision since April 8.

Making his first appearance against Chicago, Junior Guerra (2-0, 4.00) lasted six innings in each of the three starts he’s made for Milwaukee since being called up from the minors earlier this month.
