Brewers to name Astros assistant GM David Stearns as new GM
The Milwaukee Brewers announced they have hired David Stearns as their new general manager.

Prior to joining the Astros, Stearns served one year (2011-12) as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Cleveland Indians and three years (2008-11) with Major League Baseball’s Central Office, where he most recently held the position of Manager, Labor Relations. Stearns, the top assistant under Astros GM Jeff Luhnow, spent the past three seasons in Houston and now becomes the youngest GM in Major League Baseball. Stearns also fits the mold of the modern GM.
With two weeks left in the season and the Brewers eliminated from playoff contention, Braun may be shutting it down for the remainder of the season. Before he graduated from Harvard with a political science degree in 2007, he already had worked as an intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
His philosophy and approach to build a successful club wasn’t a secret, he said, involving acquiring and developing you talent while being competitive at the major league level.

The Biloxi Shuckers will finish their season tonight in the final game of the Southern League Championship series, so it’s quite possible we could see a call-up from the Brewers AA squad to fill Nelson’s void in the rotation. Still, as McCalvy points out in his piece, Stearns wasn’t alive when the Brewers went to the World Series in 1982. “So I’m happy for him, and if I can continue to hire people that end up becoming general managers with other organizations, I think that’ll be a sign of success for us”. Luhnow declined to discuss whether the team attempted to retain Stearns, whom Luhnow referred to as “a big part” of the operation.
Having grown up in New York City, Stearns grew up an “enormous” Mets fan.
“Trust me, I’ve had plenty of text messages over the last 24 hours that I will age tremendously”, Stearns said with a smile. But given the place and the schedule and what was going on in Houston, I can’t say it was an extensive preparation process. “He’s got a back issue”.
Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson will remain in a hospital for at least a second night after being hit in the head by a line drive.
