Brexit will take 2.5 percent from Britain’s economy

Austrian Finance Minister Hans Joerg Schelling warned of the effect on Britain from its vote to end 40 years of membership of the European project. Please see our terms of service for more information.

She was the only candidate left standing in the Conservative Party leadership contest on Monday, July 11 when Andrea Leadsom unexpectedly quit. He said the British government should notify its intention to leave under the so-called Article 50, which provides the framework for a departure.

As she announced her bid, Eagle said, “This vote was a message for millions in our country who felt that no-one had listened to them for a very long time”. Most importantly, they want to know whether Britain will have the same sort of access to the EU’s single market.

“There will be no attempts to remain inside the European Union, there will be no attempts to rejoin it by the back door, no second referendum”, she said.

Against one of the most daunting backdrops facing any recent British premier, May will need to decide fast who will helm the Brexit negotiations; who will try to steer the economy clear of recession as chancellor of the exchequer; and who will succeed her as home secretary to tackle immigration, the issue that dominated the referendum campaign.

EU’s parting shot: “Goodbye Mr. Cameron”. “We think the pound’s rally will run out of steam once investors learn that the economy is likely to slow down from the investment side, weakening employment and then finally consumption”, Morgan Stanley said in a morning note.

Ms May, who had favoured a vote to stay in the European Union, was left as the last woman standing after three leading rivals from the referendum’s winning Leave campaign self-destructed in the course of a short-lived leadership race.

The new leader said she was “honoured and humbled” to have been chosen by the Conservative Party to replace David Cameron, who declared earlier he would hand over the keys to Number 10 by Wednesday evening.

Theresa May took over as Britain’s Prime Minister on Wednesday. One veteran of Thatcher’s cabinet described her last week as a “bloody hard woman”, a comment that may have helped her by implying comparison with the “Iron Lady”.

The daughter of a Church of England vicar, May has been a tough-talking interior minister since 2010. She has already been likened to Germany’s Ms Merkel for her cautious, low-key style. This resulted in Cameron’s resignation from the post of PM. “There will be no attempts to remain inside the European Union, there will be no attempts to rejoin it by the back door, no second referendum”.

She also made a pitch for the political centre ground, calling for “a country that works for everyone, not just the privileged few”. Since the vote, she has repeatedly said that “Brexit means Brexit” and her backers say she is determined to make the exit a success.

“It’s not been an easy journey and, of course, we’ve not got every decision right, but I believe we leave our country stronger”, he said before the handover of power to his successor, Theresa May.
