Bridget Jones returns for more romantic entanglements

In all, “Bridget Jones’s Baby” feels as though it is trying too hard to be amusing, to be relatable and to be relevant.

Zellweger explained she spent her free time going to her nieces’ and nephews’ school plays, and going back to take some college classes – to which Harris admitted he wanted to do. Bridget also holds a steamy night with billionaire Jack Quant, played by newcomer Patrick Dempsey, whom she meets at a music festival.

When she finds herself pregnant, she must tell the men.

The film has a number of rom-com cliches even a love triangle but they don’t make you cringe.

When her younger friend and co-worker Miranda (a terrific Sarah Solemani) invites her to a weekend getaway, Bridget arrives at the airport looking like a Nancy Meyers leading lady in cream and white.

Whoever Bridget ends up choosing between the two men, she is one lucky girl.

“Bridget is eternally optimistic, self-effacing and finds humor whenever facing adversity”. While the dirtier jokes aren’t equally as amusing, it’s such a breath of fresh air to see a film find room for both in an R-rated parameter.

THE VERDICT: 12 years after her last big screen outing, Bridget Jones is back for more. “Hugh [Grant] leaned over to me about ten minutes after the movie began and said, ‘Shares, this is actually quite good!’ He didn’t attempt to mask the surprise in his voice at all”.

Unlike other pregnancy/romantic comedies, “Bridget Jones’s Baby” actually comes up with original and very amusing jokes.

Zellweger, however, remains utterly charming in the title role (Bridget’s chipper way of giving herself little bucking-up pep talks is completely endearing). What’s interesting about this incarnation of these characters is the relatability of their challenges at this stage in their lives.

“But when I saw how alive she was in the role, I thought this may be in good shape”. “I did suppose, I think like everybody else, that it [the book’s plot] would make it less likely that I would be playing this character again”, Firth admitted.

“Bridget Jones’s Baby” is the sequel worthy of the Bridget Jones moniker, not like its first failure at one.

With its evocative soundtrack and wink at another famous film romance, “Baby” may be formulaic but the formula works. It was also 15 years ago since the world was mesmerized with Jones’ “Diary“. Unlike Reason, Baby does take Bridget in a few new directions, but it’s still mostly redundant. Are you happy about Bridget and Mark, or do you wish Jack was the father?
