People across Scotland and northern England have reported seeing a bright light flash across the night sky.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said they began receiving calls at around 6.55pm on Monday evening. They said they had received numerous reports of it. It was nearly due south from where I am in Westhill.
Kim Paterson of Brechin, Angus, tweeted: ‘Proper massive rumble, ground shaking, folk seeing the sky flash blue and sirens going off everywhere…is this the end?!’
Robert Massey, deputy executive director for the Royal Astronomical Society, told CNN that he believes the object could have been a ‘low-altitude meteor, ‘ which burned into a fireball.
STV weather forecaster Sean Batty said: ‘I’ve had lots of tweets from around the North and East of the country this evening, with people reporting a loud bang and a large flash in the sky. Other people said their houses shook.
“The flash of light would be of an extraordinary level, and given tonight’s full cloud cover this would have illuminated the whole sky”.
One eyewitness posted this video of the fireball, captured over Inverness.

“It sounds like it is not a weather related phenomenon and while it could have been a number of things, the most likely is a meteor shower”.
