Bright green Olympic pool overshadows events

Competing against the likes of China, Canada, Malaysia and Russian Federation, the pair finished third twice and fourth, but produced their best performance in Beijing on March 11 with a second-place finish. It was one of the best competitions that I’ve done.

But the pair could not lift themselves on to the podium with their final dive – as Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow did so dramatically in the men’s event on Monday evening.

The water in the Olympic diving pool was bright green on Tuesday, baffling at least one competitor who said she could not see her partner underwater, although organisers said that it did not pose any danger to health. “As the sun went down it looked worse”.

Barrow will now focus on the individual platform event in Rio but Couch and Toulson are still seen as contenders in today’s 10m synchro competition – despite forging their partnership just nine months ago.

Daley tweeted a picture of the pool, which contrasted with the brilliant blue of the neighbouring water polo pool, saying: “Ermmm. what happened?!”… “In Australia, when we had a training camp in December, they put us together and we were all over the place and I thought this isn’t going to work”.

China’s Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia were awarded gold, Malaysia’s Pandelela Rinong and Cheeong Jun Hoong silver and Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion bronze at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre.

“To be honest, it comes naturally, I make sure everyone’s okay anyway”. “Then Sarah and I got back together to do the World Cup in Rio before me and Lois got back together, then it just clicked”.

“Perhaps this will be my last Olympics, I’m getting on”, she adds. For her to come to the Olympics and nail the first two options, I wanted to cry there and then.

“I’ve said to her so many times that people are going to have to watch out for this girl”.

“Someone said to my mum, ‘Why doesn’t she try diving?’ and I went off and loved it”. Winning a medal yesterday made me a little bit more relaxed.
