Brit Awards to feature tribute to ‘visionary’ Bowie

Van Hove said that at the Lazarus premiere in NY on December 7, Bowie collapsed from exhaustion – “It was then that I realised it may be the last time I would see him”.

DAVID Bowie managed to keep the scale of his supposed liver cancer secret from all but a handful of people close to him.

The concert, titled The Music of David Bowie, was already arranged before the star’s death – but was originally intended as a tribute show.

What is clear is that Bowie’s “sudden burst of new projects”, as the Times puts it, was likely meant as a farewell, as both the Times and the Sydney Morning Herald report.

According to People, there are no plans for a memorial service for Bowie’s family.

In the first of many re-inventions, he named himself David Bowie in 1966 to avoid confusion with Davy Jones, lead singer with Beatles rivals The Monkees, and studied Buddhism and mime.

“He made Blackstar for us”, said Bowie’s longtime producer, Tony Visconti, “his parting gift”.

Following news of Bowie’s death on Monday, hundreds of fans around the world gathered to say their final goodbye to the music icon. Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones paid tribute, saying “he was wonderfully shameless in his work”. A visionary artist, musician, actor, a completely renaissance man who has given us a long list of songs like “Heroes”, “Rebel Rebel”, “Young Americans”, “Diamond Dogs”, “The Jean Genie”, and many, many more, and some memorable film performances like “The Man Who Fell to Earth”, “Basquiat”, “Labyrinth”, “The Hunger”. Never saw it coming.

The crowds united around Brixton’s Ritzy cinema and sang a number of the pop legend’s hits, including Starman, Changes, and Ziggy Stardust.

Windrush Square, outside the cinema, became the focus for the main party – organised hastily on Facebook earlier in the day. One statue in the square even ended up bearing the same mark.

Sir, – David Bowie was hugely talented, hugely artistic and hugely creative, a great songwriter and a fabulous singer.

As in countless bars and homes across the world, there was only one artist playing last night.

The iconic musician had turned 69 only on Friday, which coincided with the release of “Blackstar”, his 25th studio album.

On Amazon, the three top selling albums are all by Bowie.
