Fury was one of twelve candidates eligible for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award, and though Andy Murray ultimately walked away with the award, Fury took the chance to say sorry to the public for his remarks.
“This has been a five-year journey”.
“I would like to thank all of my team…I’d like to thank my family as well”.
She said: “I am disgusted by Tyson Fury’s words and I don’t think he should have been included in a personality award”.
By Victoria Ward 9:21AM GMT 21 Dec 2015 The girlfriend of Sports Personality of the Year nominee Greg Rutherford has been sent a barrage of “derogatory, aggressive” messages online by fans of Rutherford’s rival, boxer Tyson Fury.
Murray scooped the award with more than 35 per cent of the vote and became only the fourth person to win the award twice, after Sir Henry Cooper, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.
During the proceedings, Fury apologised for his comments, saying: “If I’ve said anything in the past that’s hurt anybody, I apologise”.
Keen to make amends, Tyson told presenter Gary Lineker that it was “never his intention to hurt anybody”.
He wrote: “A well deserved victor of sports personality of the year @andy-murray”.
Teenage gymnast was named Young Sports Personality of the Year after winning bronze at the European Championships.
Murray’s mother Judy and brother Jamie were both present at the ceremony but wife Kim – who is expecting the couple’s first child in a few weeks’ time – stayed at home.
Fury has made controversial comments about women and has appeared to equate homosexuality with pedophilia.
Collecting the award, Andy said: “Thank you very much, I genuinely didn’t prepare anything, I didn’t expect this”.
Controversial comments he made prompted gay and equal rights campaigners to mount protests outside the SSE Arena ahead of the main event.
